Here are some examples of work produced by Beyond Waste's people.
- Giving waste materials a second life [http://www.waste-management-world.com/articles/article_display.cfm?ARTICLE_ID=304396]: an article from Waste Management World covering interim report on Phase 2 of project looking at recyclate markets in selected EU states. At a time when the imperative is to make the EU a recycling society, there is a growing focus on the availability of capacity to process the collected materials back to product. Particular concern has been expressed in some countries (such as the UK) about a growing dependency on exports to the Far East.
- Scoping review: waste management in the Construction & Civil Engineering Sector in E England [http://www.eera.gov.uk/Documents/About%20EERA/Policy/Planning%20and%20Transport/Waste/C&D%20survey%20Final%20Report.pdf] (PDF, 335KB). In March 2006 Beyond Waste was commissioned by the East of England Regional Assembly to undertake a scoping review of waste management in the Construction & Civil Engineering Sector in the East of England. This consisted of a review of current sources of data around arisings and management routes that waste from the sector follows, and a survey of construction/civil engineering companies active within the East of England Region, to understand how current practices may be changing and what drivers influence this.
- Scoping review: recycling and reprocessing in SE England (full set of reports [http://www.seeda.co.uk/Work_in_the_Region/Sustainable_Developments/Waste/]). The South East England Regional Development Agency (SEEDA) commissioned Beyond Waste to undertake a scoping review of recycling and reprocessing capacity and associated infrastructure within the region. The project is intended to inform the development of a shared regional vision for integrated resource management being guided by SEEDA's Waste Market Development Group. Its prime purpose is to assess the current shape of the region's recycling and reprocessing infrastructure, to baseline current recycling activity (and thereby identify any gaps) and to anticipate future needs in the light of future anticipated growth in recycling activity (and identify any opportunities presented).
- Review of Recycling Capacity in Selected EU States & Regions (PDFs: Part I [http://www.southeast-ra.gov.uk/our_work/planning/sust_nat_res/recycling_capacity-oct06-part1.pdf], Part II [http://www.southeast-ra.gov.uk/our_work/planning/sust_nat_res/recycling_capacity-oct06-part2.pdf]). A report on a pan-European research project into recycling markets for SEERA. The research builds on findings from another project, undertaken for SEEDA, looking at recycling markets in the South East of England. It seeks, amongst other things, to establish how the balance of reprocessing capacity and exports compares with other EU states and regions.
- Material Exchange Review. [/pdf/SECBEPhase2.pdf] A report giving a review of waste and material exchanges operating within South East England. Research undertaken on behalf of SECBE, the regional delivery agent for the Constructing Excellence agenda, and funded by SEEDA.
- Let's Talk Rubbish! [/pdf/Ecofootprints.pdf] (PDF), a presentation to a community event organised by eco-footprints [http://www.ecofootprints.com/]. Ideas on how we can all make a difference - become a smart shopper, buy with recycling in mind, ways to recycle, where it goes when it leaves the comfort of our homes, and what's done with it.
- Report on SEEDA Waste Market Development Group visioning event. [/pdf/SEEDAVisionReport.pdf] This event was convened in November 2005 to input to the regional recycling and reprocessing capacity project Beyond Waste was commissioned to undertake.
- Waste Management Sector WDF Engagement [/pdf/KCCSummaryReport.pdf]. Report for Kent County Council (PDF).
- Overview of hazardous waste management in the South East Region [http://www.southeast-ra.gov.uk/publications/strategies/waste_research.html]. A rapid review of data and practices by waste producers and operators for this critical waste stream reveals significant data gaps and some encouraging trends.
- A strategic study of UK research and development needs [http://www.golder.com/archive/WasteResourcesResearch-21-10-02.pdf], including a comprehensive review of waste and resource policy drivers, co-authored by Alan Potter (PDF).
- An in-depth review of the waste planning system [http://www.rics.org/Environmentalandlandconsultancy/Wastemanagement/Can+the+waste+planning+system+deliver.htm] to input to the review of PPG10, co-authored by Alan Potter.
- A presentation [http://www.southeast-ra.gov.uk/meetings/other/2004/waste_summit/waste_planning_south_east-system_in_crisis.pdf], giving the personal perspective of Alan Potter on the findings of the above study (PDF).
- Alan Potter's lead proof [http://www.lewes.gov.uk/Files/plan_alternativestrat.pdf] presented on behalf of Lewes District Council at the Public Inquiry into the East Sussex Waste Local Plan, including a detailed critique of a WISARD based BPEO assessment, and an alternative BPEO approach and delivery strategy (PDF, full proof available on request).
- An in-depth study of interregional waste flows [http://www.southeast-ra.gov.uk/publications/strategies/waste_research.html] in Southern England, co-authored by Alan Potter.
