In the ancient world, Alexander the Great was confronted with the seemingly intractable problem of releasing the Gordian Knot. He who did so, it was prophesied, would rule Asia. Unlike so many before him who had failed by using conventional logic and tools (attempting to unpick the knot), he looked at the problem from a different perspective, resolved it quickly (by cutting it through with his sword), and secured his future.
